Egyptian Luvr the nostalgic single of Rejjie Snow
Rejjie Snow has been a kind of giant sleeping in hip-hop for years. Armed with an agile flow, an ear for atmospheric and exuberant rhythms, it was only a matter of time until the Dublin MC became too big to ignore.
Just in October of last year, this Irish rapper, returned with the release of “Milk & Honey”, a piece, which is aptly described as a lullaby as it mixes children’s sounds with a hard edge, the song is a metaphor for a white girl and some gold chains.
On February 16, Dublin rapper Rejjie Snow released his debut album Dear Annie. With his long-awaited debut album, “Dear Annie”, Rejjie Snow has presented the project’s first single, “Egyptian Luvr”, a retro-inspired video, directed by Alima Lee, featuring Amine and Dana Williams in the voice and Kaytranada in the compass.
Known in part for his fascinating and surreal videos, the images for the new single are composed of many static images that run together, similar to his striking image for “I Will Still Keep U” of 2015. With a nostalgic vision of brightness and glamor, Rejjie and Dana Williams, tell the laments of the last moments of a melancholic relationship, on a soft instrumental produced by Kaytranada. “Egyptian Luvr” sounds incredibly inspired and is a promising omen of things to come.
“Egyptian Luvr” is a brilliant bop produced by Kaytranada, with which it is evident that Snow is certainly doing the impossible, so that 2018 is his year, by making it the first single of his debut LP, Dear Annie
In an interview with The Fader, Rejjie broke down the deepest meaning of the track, explaining that it is a little deeper than the title could allow:
“The song is about your last moments. Tomorrow isn’t promised and we learn this the hard way. In this song, I was in my last moments [of a relationship], telling my girl how much I love her, and thank you for this journey we rode. My album has lots of different feelings: I wanted it to feel like you’re slowing dying and losing your mind throughout.”
Dear Annie, has 20 tracks, although several of them were previously published, there are many new appearances. The promotional single “Egyptian Luvr” is the tenth song of the album, and has the collaboration of Aminé and Dana Williams, who also accompanies him in the singles “Oh No!” and “Room 27”. Other artists such as Jesse James Solomon, Caroline Smith, Ebenezer, Cam O’bi & Krondon, Jesse Boykins III and Micah Freeman, also attended and gave their support to the album.
The two-step bass line and iridescent synthesizers are vintage Kaytranada, and both MCs find a comfortable pocket on clear percussion. Animated and colloquial flow of Aminé is a perfect reflection of Snow’s baritone voice, which bounces on the bass drum. The US rapper previously partnered with Kaytranada in “Blakkst Skn” of 2015, a powerful and infectious track on interracial relationships.
Whatever you do, run to listen to it, it will leave you amazed
