Chip teams up with Red Rat for his new single “My Girl”
British rapper Chip has linked up with dancehall artist Red Rat ahead of a new project, his new single, “My Girl“, which debuted officially via GRM Daily. The accompanying visuals sees Chip overseas on a party boat, surrounded by models and drinks. The exciting drop serves as his annual summer hit, closing out the season strong with another Ragga/Dancehall release.
In an industry where so many come and go, British rapper Chip, first blew us away as a teen, when he began his musical career during grime’s first wave of artists in the U.K. with the safety catch fully off, moving toward a more mainstream hip-hop sound that brought him success in his home country and America. After the release of his second full-length, 2011’s Transition, Chipmunk officially shortened his name to Chip, signifying a gradual return to his grime roots. The change coincided with the collapse of Jive Records and Chip’s subsequent move to T.I.’s label Grand Hustle. His first release for the label was 2012’s London Boy mixtape, which featured both U.K. and American guests, including Iggy Azalea, Meek Mill, Skepta, and Wretch 32.
Chip re-established himself as grime artista over the next three years; in particular an artist who wasn’t afraid out call out his peers, as in 2015 when he called out Tinie Tempah during a freestyle on BBC Radio One. Later the same year he also began feuds with Bugzy Malone and Yungen, as well as releasing a two-part EP series called Believe and Achieve. By 2017, Chip was fully submerged in the London grime scene; signified by the release of his third album, League of My Own II.
Only 12 months since his last set, League Of My Own 2, Chip, the last of a generation who sparred on pirate radio, continues to move his multi-genre appreciation formula forward.
‘My Girl’ sees the Tottenham MC dip into his wide arsenal of flows for a smooth listen, ahead of TEN10, his fourth studio album. Chip’s first three albums have all charted no lower than #12, with his debut I Am Chipmunk, debuting at #2 back in 2009, followed by Transition in 2011 and League of My Own II in 2017, which charted at #10 y #12 respectively.
Directed by Kevin Hudson and in house specialists at Cash Motto, you can check out the video above now. It will lead up to Chip‘s next major LP, “TEN10“, which he promises will be among his most versatile yet, and will arrive September 21st.
Speaking ahead of the release of TEN10 via Twitter, Chip said: “Some of my best work honestly. No song sounds the same. Versatile. Check that out when it comes”.
“The rise of Afro-swing had me feeling super in touch with my Caribbean roots. Red Rat classics all still get the party jumping and I like to think I’ve got songs that could get the party jumping as well. Red Rat was a big childhood inspiration of mine… I’ve never worked with a dancehall artist who was current before my generation of making music, so to pull out a banger with one is an honour and feels like a senior move.”
