The Streets release new single “Call Me in the Morning”
Mike Skinner‘s return to the musical spotlight has definitely not been short lived. Last year, the music scene saw the return of The Streets, which heralded new music and a plethora of sold out shows. Now the momentum is not letting up anytime soon continuing a string of singles released throughout the year – and a memorable appearance on Kenny Allstar‘s Block Diaries album – Mike Skinner returns with The Streets for new single ‘Call Me In The Morning’.
Mike Skinner’s recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain’s party-hearty garage/2-step movement. Skinner, a Birmingham native who later ventured to the capital, was an outsider in the garage scene, though his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and, later, 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium. He spent time growing up in North London as well as Birmingham, and listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle. Skinner made his first tracks at the age of 15, and during the late ’90s, tried to start a label and sent off his own tracks while he worked dead-end jobs in fast food.
Earlier this month, Skinner revealed the collaboration in Q Magazine and also gave details of a new mixtape that he was working on. It was also confirmed there would be another tour in January and February 2019 – including dates in London, Glasgow, Manchester and Bournemouth, to the delight of long-time fans all over the UK.
Ahead of his forthcoming sold-out UK tour, which includes no less than five Brixton Academy dates in the first couple of months of the upcoming year, Mike Skinner will be taking his extensive back catalogue on a tour up and down the UK in January and February. To get us all fired up in advance, he’s just dropped “Call Me In The Morning”, a collaboration with UK rappers Chip and Grim Sickers, sounds like classic Streets material, with its off-kilter UKG beats, clever lyricism and a voice entirely his own. Chip (formerly known as Chipmunk) and Grim Sickers inject extra swagger with their uncompromising, individual styles and dexterous delivery
Mike is teaming up with two of the Grime MC’s most gifted MC’s and together, the three go in over a particularly tough Skinner production, giving us all the heat and quick witted bars. In the video, the trio spit their game in all black attire surrounded by an all black apartment.
Over urgent strings and a grimy bassline, Skinner trades verses with Chip and Grim Sickers as the trio host an all black everything after afterparty. Together, the three go in over a particularly tough Skinner production, giving us all the heat and energy that we oh so desperately need in these plummeting temperatures. As quick-witted and energetic as you’d expect from this trio, we can only hope “Call Me In The Morning” becomes a staple of either artists’ live shows.
